Inert Gas Suppression Systems

OVERVIEW

The air we breathe contains approximately 21% of Oxygen, one of the key factors in sustaining a fire. Humans can survive with a minimum of 12% Oxygen, whereas a fire will not sustain combustion under 15%. Inert Gas Fire Suppression Systems work by removing enough Oxygen in the room to extinguish the fire, but leave enough for us to be able to survive in.

Inergen Tanks

Inert gases are colourless and odourless, safe for people, the environment and cause no damage to property or data.

Inert Gaseous suppression systems generally consist of a detection and activation system linked to a pre-determined store of gas. When fire is detected the release of the gas is initiated. Systems are most commonly ‘total flood systems’ meaning that the whole protected risk area is filled to achieve a specific design concentration suppressing the fire. ‘Local application systems’ are also available to discharge gas directly at a specific risk.

iFLOW FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM

Using innovative technology, the iFlow Fire Suppression System is a state-of-the-art delivery system that provides a regulated and effective discharge of inert gas clean agent.

During a typical system discharge, a peak pressure and flow spike occurs. The iFLOW system eliminates this pressure spike by providing a controlled flow of gas during discharge. This allows for the use of smaller diameter, low pressure piping and reduced pressure relief venting requirements.

WHAT ARE INERT GASES?

At Global Fire, we use two types of naturally occurring inert gasses.

INERGEN fire suppression agent is made up of 50% Argon, 42% Nitrogen and 8% CO2. The CO2 in this blend helps us absorb oxygen into our blood cells. By doing this it decreases the risk of symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue, cognitive disturbance and headaches. Inergen to date is the only gas suppression agent which has been tested and proved to be safe on humans.

IG-55 fire suppression is a balanced mix of 50% Argon & 50% Nitrogen, both of which are found naturally in our atmosphere. The fire suppression agent provides good buoyancy, which keeps it in the protected space for longer, thus optimising the suppression period.
