Employee Story: Chris – Business Development Manager
Can you tell us about your role when you started at Global Fire & Security, and what drew you to the position?
I originally joined Global Fire & Security as a Maintenance and Small Works Electrical Engineer. Honestly, at the time it was just meant to be a temporary role whilst I looked for something else, but almost immediately, I realised how much I enjoyed being part of the team, and here I am, 24 years later!
How has your career developed since joining, and what kind of support did you receive along the way?
I began my journey on the road as an Electrical Engineer, which was a fantastic hands on experience. After a few years, I wanted to take on a new challenge, something that would allow me to use my engineering knowledge in a slightly different way. When an opportunity opened up in Small Works Sales, I decided to give it a try.
That role gave me a whole new perspective, helping me build relationships with key decision makers and secure projects for Global Fire & Security. From there, my career naturally progressed to Business Development Manager, which is my role today. Along the way, I’ve had the support of the directors and my colleagues, who have always encouraged me to learn and take on new challenges.
Looking back, what has been the most rewarding part of your progression within the company?
There have been so many rewarding moments. In my early engineering days, I got to work on some iconic venues across the UK, places I would definitely not have the opportunity to visit otherwise.
Today, in my Business Development Manager role, the reward comes from seeing relationships I’ve helped build grow, turn into long term partnerships that benefit the whole company. It’s incredibly satisfying to see the impact of your work across the business.
What makes Global Fire and Security a great place to build a long-term career?
Despite Global’s continuous growth, the company has never lost the values and respect that kept me here in 2001. Our directors are hands on and approachable, working closely with staff across all levels, so there’s a real sense of unity and no divide between roles. It’s an environment where people are encouraged to grow, take on new challenges, and build a long term career.
To finish, let's get to know you personally, what do you enjoy outside the office?
Outside of work, I think it's important mentally and physically, to stay active, if you can. I play for a local walking football team and recently, I was selected to represent England in the national walking football team, which has been an incredible experience. My colleagues love to talk about how there is an 'international footballer' in the office!
